IN TOUCH WITH MP EARL DREESHEN
March 07, 2016
This past week was spent in the constituency where I was able to hear from many constituents on a variety of issues. A few of the highlights of the week included the Olds Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, a visit with a grade 9 class in Cremona and a chat with the Central Alberta Law Society. I would like to thank everyone for comments on topics ranging from the federal deficit, to the ongoing situation in the Middle East, to the upcoming legislation on assisted dying. I will be pleased to bring your comments to Ottawa to help shape our discussions on these issues.
Local Businesses Receive Recognition
On February 26th I was in Edmonton for the Alberta Chambers of Commerce 2016 Awards of Distinction. While there, I was extremely pleased to see some local businesses earn credit on the provincial stage.
Melanie Tuck of Collegiate Sports Medicine took home the award for Woman Entrepreneur of the Year. Congratulations to Melanie and her team who have seen tremendous growth in Red Deer and Olds since she opened her clinic.
Although they didn’t win, Tannas Conservations Services out of Cremona were nominated in the category for Young Entrepreneur and Platinum Homes and Developments based in Red Deer were nominated in the Small Business Category. Both of these companies have done an incredible job growing their business to the benefit of our communities.
Liberals Propose a National Carbon Tax
Last week there was a First Ministers meeting with Premiers from across the country coming together to discuss a national climate change strategy. The Liberal Government asked for a $15 national carbon tax; however, they were not able to get unanimous support.
My colleagues and I have been steadfast in our position that now is not the time to raise taxes on Canadian families and businesses who create jobs. The tax that was proposed is a tax on every single Canadian family and it would increase the price of essential day-to-day items. In fact, the Ontario Liberals’ carbon tax has already raised the price of gasoline and home heating and the upcoming carbon tax in Alberta will soon do the same. Instead of increasing taxes on families and businesses, the Liberals should instead support policies that will create jobs by encouraging the private sector to invest in the Canadian economy.
Mobile Office Update
The next Mobile Office will be in Benalto at the Leisure Centre on Wednesday March 16th and then in Didsbury on April 6. Office will run from 10-2 both days. If you are in the area, please feel free to stop in and introduce yourself and bring any questions or concerns.
Sincerely your Member of Parliament,
Earl Dreeshen
