In Touch with MP Earl Dreeshen
I hope everyone enjoyed their Canada Day weekend. This was the first time since being elected that I was not able to celebrate in Central Alberta. I was asked to represent the Canadian Parliament in OSCE (Organizations for Security and Co-operation in Europe) discussions happening from July 1-5 in Tbilisi, Georgia. While I am honoured to have been chosen to take part in these important and timely international forums, I am already looking forward to spending Canada Day back at home next year as we mark Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation.
Prior to leaving for Georgia, I spent the previous week across all corners of the riding. Among the highlights were the Sundre rodeo, Grade 12 Graduation at Innisfail High School and Hugh Sutherland High School in Carstairs and the 60th Anniversary of Camp BB Riback at Pine Lake. I was also excited to join community members and volunteers for the 2019 Canada Winter Games community update, where the local leadership group unveiled the senior leadership team, sport schedule and the official logo for the 2019 Games.
I had the special honour of attending the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Ceremony in Calgary on June 24th. In order to receive the award, individuals must demonstrate consistent commitment in service, skill and physical recreation. This is a tremendous accomplishment and I was proud to be on hand as 16 youth from Red Deer – Mountain View were honoured.
Northern Gateway Pipeline
Last week in a divided decision, the Federal Court of Appeal quashed the approval for the Northern Gateway pipeline project, saying that further consultation with First Nations communities must take place.
My colleagues in the Conservative Caucus and I are very disappointed with the court’s decision. In his dissenting report Justice Ryer said that the consultations were adequate and he also dismissed the arguments of the intervenor as well as the merits of any subsequent appeal. Given the division among the judges, we urge the Liberal Government and the project proponent to appeal this decision. 31 First Nations groups have part ownership in Northern Gateway as members of the Aboriginal Equity Partnership. We are very encouraged by the project’s widespread support among First Nations communities.
Northern Gateway will create over 4000 much needed jobs during construction, and another 1000 during operation.
